The History of Pigeon Forge

Many visitors wonder how Pigeon Forge got its name. Part of the city’s name actually refers to the Little Pigeon River. In the early 19th century, tremendous numbers of passenger pigeons used to fly over this river. In fact, it’s said that the sky would actually darken with the number of birds making their way through the valley. In 1817, a man named Issac Love built an iron forge in one area of town. This structure accounts for the second part of the city’s name. One of the most notable places in Pigeon Forge is called the Old Mill. It was built in 1791 by one of Pigeon Forge’s most famous pioneers, Mordecai Lewis. As more settlers arrived in Pigeon Forge, churches, barns, and homes were built to meet their needs. From 1900 to 1930, the introduction of the automobile, phone service, train travel, and improvements in the Old Mill caused Pigeon Forge to expand and flourish.
